Application for Canadian Citizenship
To apply for your Canadian citizenship you must meet the following requirements :
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Be a permanent resident (landed immigrant) in Canada.
- Have resided in Canada for a total of three years (1095 days) out of the four years preceding the date of application. For the time you resided in Canada before you became a permanent resident, you may count 1/2 time (up to a maximum of 730 half days which equals 365 days credit). The time you resided in Canada after you became a permanent resident counts as full time.
- Have basic knowledge of English or French language.
- Have adequate knowledge about the history of Canada, its geography, government, values, institutions, symbols and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship to pass the citizenship (adults 55 years of age and over are exempted). - Persons with a criminal record, facing criminal charges or subject to immigration enforcement action may be ineligible for citizenship.
You must not
- Be subject to any prohibition under the Citizenship Act; or are in prison, on parole or have been convicted of a war crime or a crime against humanity
- Be under a removal order (asked by Immigration Canadian officials to leave Canada).

- Complete the application form.
- Pay the citizenship fees. When you submit an application for Canadian citizenship you must pay for Processing Fee and a Right of Citizenship Fee. The total required fee for the application is $200.00. The Processing Fee is not refundable. However, the Right of Citizenship Fee will be refunded, if your application is not approved . This fee is payable to the most financial institutions (such as a bank).
- The required supporting documents should be prepared. If these documents are not in English or French, they should be translated.
Citizenship Test
When you come for the citizenship test, you need to bring the original documents you submitted with your application which includes personal identification, immigration documents, any passport or travel documents relevant to the four years before your application.
About the Test
The citizenship test is written, but CIC may ask you to come to an interview with a citizenship judge.
The test evaluates two things :
- Your knowledge about Canada and
- Your language abilities.
Getting ready for the Test
Once CIC have received your application for citizenship, they will send you a copy of the study guide. We can also help you to prepare for the citizenship exam.
The total approximate time for a routine Application
- For file creation and initial review: Up to 9 months.
- Citizenship test and final decision: Add 4 to 6 months.
- Ceremony: Add 2 to 4 months.
